Shield ferns

The shield fern (Polystichum) are a globally widespread fern genus, which comprises about 200-300 species. It took its name from the shield Indusi.

Description

It is consistently to soil inhabiting ferns, whose main shoots grow erect to ascending. All species are evergreen.

The fertile and sterile fronds are the same shape. (Exception: Polystichum acrostichoides.) They are in form lineal-lanceolate to broadly lanceolate, and one to three times pinnate.

In many species, the leaf blade slightly plump and thick-leathery. The top Fiederabschnitte have in many ways an asymmetric ground with a forward-facing teeth. The main axis of the frond is often filled with chaff shed.

The sori are located on each Fiederabschnitt in each of a series between the two leaf margins and midrib.

They are round and are covered by a rounded, peltate indusium, which falls in some species very soon, stay with others but also long.
