The Moment of Europe Day

Europe Day is celebrated on 9 May of each year in memory of the same date in 1950 when French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman made his famous declaration that led to the creation of the first European Community: the Coal and Steel.

This proposal, known as the Schuman Declaration, is considered the beginning of the creation of what is now the European Union.

History

In 1985 Milan Summit of Heads of State and Government decided to celebrate 9 May as “Europe Day”.  The official designation of that day in May as Europe Day coincided with the centenary of Schuman birth (1886), who along with Jean Monnet, Konrad Adenauer and Alcide De Gasperi, are considered the Founding Fathers of the European Community.

On May 9, has become a European symbol which, together with the European flag, motto and the European anthem.  The Day of Europe is a unique symbol of the EU, unlike the flag and anthem they are symbols of Europe by extension. This is because the Schuman declaration came after the creation of the Council of Europe, from which the other two symbols.
Celebration

Despite being the only day of official celebration of the EU, in practice none of the member countries of the Union organizing festivities commemorative high-level, such as those performed on the occasion of national holidays of each state. However, in 2006 France organized several events including free entry to the room where the speech is delivered, and enlightenment of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris and the Eiffel Tower in blue.

The organization of European public postal PostEurop, printed a stamp in honor of the European day I go into circulation on May 9, 2000, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration.

Each year the European Commission published a promotional poster, which includes a different reason each time, accompanied by a slogan referring to a topical issue within the EU.
